● The Pro Football Chronicle (Macmillan, 1990) — An informal, decade-by-decade history of the NFL inspired by Bill James’ Historical Baseball Abstract. Written with Bob O’Donnell.
● The National Forgotten League (University of Nebraska Press, 2012) — Entertaining stories and observations from pro football’s first 50 years.
For the latter, I was interviewed by Bill Littlefield on his National Public Radio program, “Only a Game.” I also did a podcast with Sportsideo’s Keith Irizarry.
In a Grantland piece, Charlie Pierce called the book an “essential — and very often hilarious — history of the NFL in its iron-men-and-wooden-ships decades.” Library Journal judged it “the best football book of the year.”
